FEATURE The Cox Classic
presented by Chevrolet has announced that
the prize purse will be raised to
$625,000, making it the third year in a
row that the Cox Classic has raised the
tournament purse. The winning player will
receive $112,500 in prize
money. The increase in purse
size makes the Cox Classic the third
largest purse on the Nationwide Tour.
"Having one of the largest purses on the
Nationwide Tour allows the Cox Classic to
attract a strong field of play and a large
crowd of spectators," said Jamie Alt,
tournament director. "That is what
separates the Cox Classic from other
tournaments. " Last year the Cox Classic
recorded record-breaking attendance of
over 68,000 tournament fans. "By raising the purse,
we show our commitment for making the Cox
Classic and the city of Omaha, the premier
stop on the Nationwide Tour, " said Alt.
The Cox Classic will celebrate its tenth
year in 2005. Cox Classic Volunteers Are The

FEATURE With summer golf
comes many opportunities for golfers to
enjoy numerous courses while championing
the many charities and organizations that
benefit the needy. Some of those that
have been mentioned in Metropolitan Tee
Times in the past, continue to be the most
fun while benefitting local charities and
organizations. The most prestigious of
these is The Nationwide Tours Cox Classic
which continues to benefit local
organizations, raising over $1 Million.
The 2004 Tournament proceeds benefitted
the following charities: Boy Scouts of
America - Mid America Council, Camp
CoHoLo, Girl Scouts - Great Plains
Council, Hogan's Junior Golf Heroes,
Nebraska Children's Home, Nebraska Organ
Tissue Donor Coalition, Omaha Hearing
School, Omaha Jaycees, Pacific Pals,
Ronald McDonald House, Tangier Shriners,
Youth Emergency Services
(Y.E.S.). Congratulations
to Chris Weimers and Scott Gutchewski,
local professionals, who have qualified
for the 2005 British Open. Also Kudo's to
Phil Hranac of Kearney and E J Hamilton of
Omaha for qualifying in the Boy's 2005
Junior Amateur Sectional and Mary Narzisi
of Omaha in the Girls 2005 Junior Amateur
Sectional. Seven-time USGA
champion Carol Semple Thompson, 56, of
Sewickley, Pa., has been selected as the
captain for the 2006 United States of
America Curtis Cup team by the Women's
Committee of the USGA. The 2006 Curtis Cup
will take place July 29-30 at the Bandon
Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon,
Ore. Find yourself a
friend and get ready for the First Annual
Two Man Handicapped Best Ball Tournament
scheduled sometime this September to be
conducted at The Knolls Golf Course. More
detailed information will follow in the
next issue of MTT. Okay, I will be
the first to admit that I don't believe
that Michelle Wie should be playing on the
PGA Tour. After watching her play at the
John Deere Classic, however, she has
game; better than most of the men she
competes against. I don't think she could
keep this up week after week on the men's
grueling circuit, but, I think she is good
for golf and gives the women someone to
identify with - much like we did with
Tiger. I think it ironic that golf was
established for men (Gentlemen Only Ladies
Forbidden), yet the by-laws state that the
best golfers in the world can compete,
whereas, the LPGA states that only women
can compete on their tour. Only a matter
of time before we see a man compete on the
LPGA tour. How about local pro Scott
Gutchewski closing like he did at the John
Deere? Should set him up for a great week
in Scotland. Playing conditions are more
like Nebraska. The 4th Annual
Al & Jean Veys Memorial Golf
Tournament is scheduled for Sunday,
September 11, 2005 at Eagle Hills Golf
Course in Papillion, Ne. Registration
begins at 7:30 am with an 8:00 am Shotgun
Start. The 4 person scramble format has
proved to be a fun time for all.
Immediately following the tournament, from
noon to 4:00 pm is a steak luncheon with a
raffle and awards presentation at the
Knights of Columbus Hall at 43rd and
Washington Street in Omaha. The cost of
$75.00 per person ( $300.00 per foursome)
includes 18 holes of golf, cart, steak
luch, prizes, skins, and drinks. If you
are not a golfer you can still join the
festivities for lunch for $15.00 per
person. Entries are Due August 31st,
2005, by contacting Gary Wesley 734-4235
or Jim Nekuda at 733-7700. |
